MNT Assistant Pediatric Calculator Form

Pediatric Calculator Form

Purpose:
The Pediatric calculator provides the tools to calculate percentile values for height, weight and BMI. It also allows you to determine weight and height values that correspond to various percentiles. Using standard pediatric formulas, this tool calculates resting metabolic rate (RMR), total caloric requirement, protein requirement, and fluid requirement. .

Function:
The Pediatric Calculator may be opened from the ribbon at the top of the Session notes window or on the Clinical Test Results form. After opening the Pediatric Calculator you will see the birth date and gender values. If you have already recorded the height and weight in the Clinical Test Results window then just click on the ‘Get Ht/Wt’ button. This will copy the values from the Clinical Test Results window to here. It will also calculate the age in months, select the chart type, and calculate the BMI.

Click the ‘Calculate Percentiles’ button to compute the percentiles using the criteria you have already provided. By clicking the pencil button, you will be able to paste these newly calculated values into your session notes.

For additional information you may calculate the corresponding heights and weights for various percentile values.

Click the ‘Calculate Other’ button to compute the RMR, Total kcal (RDA for energy), Protein and fluid requirements. The paste buttons will copy these new values to the appropriate fields on the ‘Dietary Analysis’ and ‘Dietary Intake Goals’ forms. By clicking the pencil button, you will be able to paste these newly calculated values into your session notes.

Notes:
The percentile values are calculated using tables from the (2000) National Center for Health Statistics in collaboration with the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts. The other values are computed using formulas supported by Benedict, A., Gilger, M.A., Klish, W.J., Motil, K.J., Phillips, S.M., Shulman, R.J., Terrazas, N., Thomas, J. 2004. The Baylor pediatric nutrition handbook for residents. 4th ed. Houston, TX: Baylor College of Medicine.
