MNT Assistant Dietary Analysis Results Form

Dietary Analysis Results Form

Purpose:
The Dietary Analysis Results window provides the tools to quickly evaluate a diet diary or 24 hour recall and efficiently develop an appropriate nutrition prescription for Medical Nutrition Therapy.

Function:
To assess a 24 hour recall or diet diary use the ‘Diet Record Worksheet’ forms provided with the MNT Assistant. You may access these MS Word documents by clicking the ‘Start’ button on your Windows task bar going to ‘Programs’ then to ‘MNT Assistant’ and click on ‘Tools.’ Choose the Diet Record Worksheet and the Diet Record Worksheet Summary documents. Using these forms you can translate a diet record to a food frequency by converting food portion sizes in the record to the corresponding food group. Understanding portion size is important. Use the Serving Definition List (see Tools) to understand portion sizes for the food frequency.

After recording the number of servings in the appropriate food groups, click the calculate button and it will estimate the nutrient values. These values will appear in the fields above the Food Frequency Assessment. Update caffeine and water intake values accordingly.

Unless you have the ability to measure estimated RMR, use the RMR calculator to compute the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and Total energy requirement (Total kcal).

After completing the assessment you may now define your nutrition goals or prescription. Click on the ‘View/Edit Goals’ button. Here you may enter the goal or prescription values you want for your patient. Enter the total calories (Kcals Intake) and then the nutrient values and percentages you require. By entering the percent it will automatically calculate the grams and visa versa for fat, protein and carbohydrate. The may record the DRIs values for other nutrients by selecting the appropriate age and gender categories in the DRI selector tool. When you have finished recording goal values you may calculate Diabetic Exchanges, Food groups and Allowances. Click the calculate button and suggested food group values will be provided.

You can change the exchange values and you will see the impact of those changes to the right in the major macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrate, fat and total calories).

After completing the dietary assessment and prescription you will be able to print a nutrition assessment report for your patient that compares estimated intake with goals.

Notes:
For most Medical Nutrition Therapy, the food frequency assessment will be an ideal tool for estimating nutrient values in order to assess change over time.
